United LAX PVG nonstop flights approved

DOT officials approved United's proposal to launch Los Angeles-Shanghai nonstop flights on May 20, 2011.

With more than 200 daily departures from Los Angeles International Airport, United would offer convenient connections to customers throughout North America.

The proposed flights from LAX will depart at 1:33 p.m. and arrive at Shanghai Pudong International Airport at 5:55 p.m. the next day. Service from Shanghai, beginning May 21, 2011, will depart PVG at 7:50 p.m. and arrive in Los Angeles at 4:47 p.m. the same day. The new service is consistent with the airline's previously announced capacity guidance.

United intends to operate the lax pvg service with three-cabin Boeing 777 aircraft, which offer customers service in United First class,United Business and United Economy

"We are pleased that DOT approved the application so quickly, and we believe travelers will be pleased with this service, as it will connect Shanghai with more points in North America than any other airline can," United spokesman Rahsaan Johnson said.
American and United both serve Shanghai from their Chicago hubs, and United flies to Shanghai from its San Francisco hub. At present, United offers connecting service from Los Angeles to Shanghai through San Francisco.

In addition, Continental Airlines, owned by United's parent United Continental, offers New York-Shanghai service.
